Learning English at Approach (back to top)

The Intensive and Semi-Intensive programs are designed for students who need quality of lessons and flexibility of schedule at affordable prices.

Our ESL (English as a Second Language) program is the most flexible ever! We are the only school that lets you choose when you want to start, how many hours a week you want to study, and what time you want to come to school. Our teachers are in class throughout the day, and no matter when you choose to come, we will always have a new lesson available at your level.

As a result of our experience with students of all levels and from all over the world, we have developed teaching techniques and programs that really work. Careful placement and program selection ensure that you will be studying in the learning environment that is best for you. Our methodology emphasizes individual needs and gives you the strategies to function, perform and rapidly communicate. Comprehensive cultural immersion maximizes your learning experience.

We offer classes Monday through Thursday from 9:00AM to 8:00PM and on Fridays, we are open all day for free extra help, multimedia lab use and self study. Flexibility is the key to our students' success. Courses start everyday and you can choose what days and times you want to come to school.

On your first day, you will complete your registration, get your student ID and materials, take a placement test and undergo an interview with an instructor to be placed in one of our 12 ESL levels. Then you will be enrolled in your grammar, reading, writing, conversation, vocabulary, listening, and pronunciation courses. Each class lasts 50 minutes. Once you know your levels, you can select your schedule.

This flexibility gives you also the option of only taking the subjects you are interested in, such as taking more conversation lessons instead of grammar lessons. Our personalized placement combined with our flexible schedule and small classes ensures that you will take full advantage of your time spent at Approach.

Besides the regular English courses, you can choose private instruction or our ESL study group – whichever option you select, we guarantee that you will achieve your goals.

As an ESL private student, you can select what you want to accomplish in your sessions; you can do anything from reviewing grammatical concepts to preparing for college courses, writing and editing business or academic papers, practicing pronunciation, or learning business vocabulary. Scheduling is flexible: you can choose the time that works best for you. ESL private classes are offered to all levels, from beginner to advanced.

Advanced students can enroll in the ESL study group and receive the same benefits of private instruction. Students will combine classes from our ESL program with an individualized course of study.

Cultural and Educational Activities:
Students enjoy a great cultural experience visiting famous Boston sights and participating in university tours, as well as shopping and eating out. Some of the sites you can see are: Public Garden, Beacon Hill, Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, North End,  Harvard Square, Harvard Museum of Natural History, Museum of Science, JFK Presidential Library, Harvard University, MIT  and Boston University.

Parties and Culture Nights:
Program coordinators organize and host welcome and farewell parties at the beginning and the end of the program. These parties, along with less formal gatherings like picnics and barbeques, enable students, staff, teachers, and host families to get to know each other in informal settings. Students share cultural characteristics of their countries with fellow students from around the world at the Teen Culture nights. These fun and informative evenings take place in the host families houses and include games and dinner.

Outdoor Events:
Approach offers an exciting schedule of sports and recreational activities for all of its students. These include soccer and canoeing, as well as outdoor concerts at Boston's famous Esplanade during the summer and skiing or snow tubing during the winter.

Housing:
Approach arranges housing with an American family giving the international student an affordable option and excellent opportunity to practice English while learning about American culture. Our homes are carefully screened and selected. We provide the student with a shared room in a home near the school or accessible by public transportation.

Acceptance Requirements:
All participants must be 12 years of age or older. Students must submit the application form and tuition deposit at least four weeks in advance.

Personal spending money:
Approach recommends its prospective students to bring $500.00 to be spent per month on extra meals and personal needs.
