A Bit About Our Instructors

Alison J. MacAdams
Academic Director

PhD in the Interdisciplinary Program in Literary Studies, MA in Comparative Literature, BA in Comparative Literature and Romance Languages with a Minor in Italian (Magna Cum Laude and Highest Honors), Brandeis University. Her teaching experience began in the 8th grade! Also serves as Project Manager, Corporate Program Developer, Instructor of English, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Staff member since 1995.


Andrew Haynes
ESL Specialist

BA English Keene State College. MST(Masters in the Science of Teaching) University of New Hampshire. Taught literature in High School for several years. Taught English in Rome. Staff member since 2005.


Brian J. Smith
ESL Specialist

BS from Northeastern University, Boston , MA .  His teaching career began in 1990 and includes 5 years in Japan . Serves as Instructor of English and teaches Professional Behavior in the Teacher Training Program at Approach. Staff member since 1998.


Carl Phillips
ESL Specialist

BS in Psychology, Empire State College (SUNY), Nanuet, NY. TEFL Certification from the Boston Language Institute. Has taught ESL at Boston Center for Adult Education and La Alianza Hispana (with Mass DOE Curriculum). Currently on Clinical Teaching Faculty at Tufts School of Medicine (Communication and Rapport Skills) and has 20 years experience teaching Music. Staff member since June, 2006.


Eric Sewall
ESL Specialist

BA in French Language and Literature from Bates College. Taught an English class in a French High School. Has taught French Immersion in elementary schools since graduation. A lifeguard since '94, Eric has worked teaching swimming, soccer, sailing, chess and juggling. Eric is currently organizing a mathematics program for elementary schoolers.


Luciana Sarra
ESL Specialist and Academic Advisor

BA in English Language Teaching from Universidade Sao Francisco -- Sao Paulo, Brazil. Holds TESL certification from Approach International Student Center, and has more than 10 years of experience teaching English to both children and adults. Serves as Instructor of English and Academic Advisor. Staff member since 2001.


Michael Hnatko
ESL Specialist

BA in Comparative Literature from Brown, MA from Columbia. Has taught English and Film in Japan, Korea, Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Greece, France and Spain. Staff member since June, 2006.


Peter Keshavan
Test Preparation Specialist

BA Philosophy, Boston University . Has taught standardized exams to international students on a full-time basis since 1996. Developed unique systems to teach grammar, reading and writing for test preparation purposes. Teaches TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, SAT, LSAT and TOEIC.
